The OPENi project delivers a novel consumer-centric, privacy-by-design, open source mobile cloud applications development platform, serving as a catalyst for a new mobile applications era. Main element of the OPENi architecture is the introduction of users’ Cloudlet, where applications access, store and update users’ data and content (i.e. profile, location, social data) according to their preferences.
To this end, in OPENi we have developed OPENi-enabled cloud-based mobile applications, to demonstrate and educate end-users on the importance of controlling and managing their digital personal data, generated and accessed by mobile applications, via OPENi’s novel privacy control and personal data management framework and visualizations.
More specifically, the OPENi-enabled application can access end-user’s personal data stored in her/his personal Cloudlet. These data are generated by all the OPENi enabled applications activated by the user with user’s consent and via OPENi privacy framework. In the case of OPENi demo applications, these personal data are: users’ profile data, multimedia data & privacy preferences data.
The OPENi-enabled applications allow end-users to have explicit control over the use of their digital personal data. This is achieved with OPENi privacy framework that enables users to gain full control and transparency on the use of their personal data stored in their personal Cloudlet and accessed by OPENi-enabled applications. OPENi privacy framework allows end users to interact through advanced visualization experiences with their OPENi personal cloudlet, and enables them to get insights on the use of the personal data and to govern the access to their data in an easy-to-use, intuitive and innovative way.
As part of the demonstration, OPENi demo applications include OPENi Privacy Control Visualization Framework and demonstrate the following innovative user-centric privacy-aware features i.e.,
I. Permissions Dialog & Personal Data Visualization: an interface that enables users to visualize, monitor and get useful insights on the use of their personal data from OPENi enabled applications.
II. Personal Data Management (Opt-in & Opt-out): interface that enables users to control in a transparent way the use of the personal data via clear and easy to understand optin and opt-out methods in a layered and structured way.
III. Fine-grained Privacy Control: an interface, that enable users to control the use of their personal data in a user-friendly and fine-grained per-application access control model, being able to determine the user/access of (a) groups of data/object types, (b) groups of data/objects, (c) exact data/objects and (d) data/objects specific attribute, all stored in the Cloudlet.
